RYA Yachtmaster Practical



An RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers. It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper.

This is an intensive course for experienced skippers who wish to gain a professional qualification. This course will help you refine and practice your skills under instruction of an experienced RYA Yachtmaster Instructor. There are many skill builder opportunities that the club provides to help members achieve their Yachtmaster and we actively seek to encourage our offshore skippers to attain this accreditation.

We run our offshore practical courses out of Hamble Point down in the Solent.

Course Title: RYA Yachtmaster Certificate

Course Cost: approx £900 (excludes exam fee if taking certificate. Approx £208 for Coastal and £241 for the Offshore YM)

Course Duration: 5 days(+2 days for exam) Arrival is by 9am on the Monday morning in Hamble. Full joining instructions will be issued on confirmation of course.

Course Description: "This is an intensive course for experienced skippers who wish to gain a professional qualification. This course will help you refine and practice your skills under instruction of an experienced RYA Yachtmaster Instructor. Unlike other courses in the cruising programme, there is no formal training to complete in order to become a Yachtmaster. Instead, provided that you have sufficient experience and seatime and can meet the pre-exam requirements, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge"

What's Included: "RYA accredited instructor, accommodation on board, gas, diesel, breakfast, lunch and evening meal each day, use of the boat for your exam. To enable you to fully enjoy the course, you will require wet weather gear; a sleeping bag and pillow will also be required. Refer to our comprehensive kit list. NOTE: Mooring fees, which are split between the students, are not included.

Prior Knowledge/Experience: :"Depending on which exam your are preparing for, please refer to either Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore Pre-exam requirements. " Full details can be seen on the RYA website here

Ability after the course: The definition of a Yachtmaster is: 'A yachtsman or woman competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage that can be completed without the use of astronavigation'. Yachtmasters should be able to enter any well-charted harbour for the first time, with sufficient depth, by day or night.
