Offshore Racing for 2022

In 2022, LCSC will be working with Hugh Styles, a former two time British Olympian, and coach of the British team in the last 4 Olympic Games, to further develop offshore racing within the club.

Our 2022 offshore race training and racing calendar has now been launched, and each element is available for booking via the online calendar. We'll start with the winter lecture series, covering the main elements of Offshore Racing. These will be held on club nights with the following dates and topics:

  • 8th March - Boat Handling
  • 22nd March - Boat Speed
  • 29th March - Manoeuvres
  • 5th April - Race Starts
  • 12th April - Race Preparation

For the practical on the water race training, we will be using up to 3 boats depending on demand for each training session. The format of each training session will be dictated to some extent by who has signed up, but we'll endeavour to ensure you are covering new skills on each session on the water. Each training session will have a brief before we all go out, to cover what is planned for the full training session. There will be debriefs after each day, and then a round up after the end of the training session to reinforce key learning elements. The practical training dates are as follows:

  • 1st to 3rd April
  • 14th to 18th April
  • 19th to 21st April
  • 29th April to 1st May
  • 6th to 8th May

Hot on the heels of the training, the club will then be entering up to three boats in the following races during 2022, again depending on demand:

  • 13th to 15th May - RORC - De Guingand Bowl
  • 1st to 5th June - RORC Myth of Malham
  • 24th to 26th June - Round the Island
  • 7th to 10th July - RORC St Malo Race
  • 21st to 24th July - Tattinger Regatta
  • 29th July 5th August - Cowes Week
  • 1st 4th October - RORC Cherbourg Race

The training program is aimed at three levels:

a)Those new to Offshore Racing

b)Intermediates looking to Progress

c)Race Skipper Training

This will focus on experienced racers looking to become skippers, and also existing race skippers looking to improve their performance and that of their crews.

For those that missed the launch of the race calendar, you can see a recording of it here.

If you're interested in joining some / all of the events, or have any questions, and have not already filled the questionnaire, please email Ray.

Hope to see you at one of the race events!
