TALK - How Sails Work

Tue 17th November, 20:00-22:00

This session is an all in on sail trim from a real expert in the art and science from a racing sailor and North Sails sailmaker. We'll be bringing across part of the sail-trim session Ruaridh recently gave for the RORC and Magenta Project: to dig into and explain what is happening, whilst grounded in decisions on the boat.

Ruaridh Wright is a North Sails expert, sailmaker and professional sailor. He started racing aged seven on a Swan 44 with his father in Largs, then came through the North Sails loft floor, building and repairing sails.

Since then, he has raced on everything from Cape 31s and Fast 40s to TP52s, a Z86 and a VO65. He won the 2018 RORC Commodores' Cup, raced aboard Chinese Whisper to fifth overall in the Sydney Hobart, and was selected as a grinder, trimmer and driver for the Austrian Ocean Race Project's VO65 campaign. In August 2026, he was one of the four sailors aboard Class40 Gambit, finishing second in Class40 in the 1,805-nautical-mile 2026 Round Britain & Ireland Race - just 1 hour, 7 minutes and 33 seconds behind the winner after nine days at sea.

We look forward to seeing you on the evening!
