Rope Work Course - FULL - Pls sign up to the waitlist

9th January, 20:00 - 21:00

Members Event:

If you've ever been interested in learning how to splice modern ropes, now's your chance. The club is putting on a 5 week course to give you a working knowledge of how splicing works, and plenty of opportunity to practice a number of the most common splices yourselves.

The course will be loosely broken down as follows, depending on how much progress we make. Each class will have a demo, and then set you off to try the splices yourselves, and will last about an hour

Day 1 - An introduction to modern ropes, and why they are made the way they are. We'll look at the equipment needed to splice, and start off with the basic lock splice

Day 2 - We'll cover splicing ropes with covers, and make a lock splice loop with the cover finished correctly. This is a very common way of finishing the end of a halyard

Day 3 - We'll look at making soft shackles - they are quick to make, and can be used all over the boat.

Day 4 - We'll take soft shackles a step further, and look to incorporate low friction rings, or modifying them to suit your needs

Day 5 - We'll now attempt incorporating a soft shackle into the end of a line. Great for using as sheets on a boat.

The dates are of the sessions are

Tuesdays - Jan, 9th / Jan 16th / Feb 6th / Feb 20th / Feb 27th

The course will be £50 to contribute towards the cost of the club purchasing all the splicing equipment you'll need to use. On top of the course fee, you'll pay for the cost of rope that you use. If you're looking to make up a rope you'll use later, either let me know what you're looking to do, or bring the rope with you. If you don't get your splice finished within the class, want more explanation, or miss a class, we'll have catch up sessions before each class as needed

We have a lot of members interested in learning about modern rope splicing, and in the learning method of See One, Do One, Teach One, I'll be looking for volunteers to help teach classes in the future. It would be great if you could indicate when signing up if you'd be willing to help.

Please secure your place below.
