8th February 2022, 20:00 - 22:00

Navigation before GPS - Part one

Now that our plotters, phones, ipads, tooth brushes are all GPS enabled, it's hard to imagine the world where working out your location at sea was a combination of assumptions and educated guesses, and the devastating consequences that accompanied this.

This is the first in a two part talk that will start with the main events and drivers, that pushed the pursuit for a solution to establishing a position at sea.

We'll then look at the celestial navigation solutions the world adopted in some depth, which guided worldwide shipping up until the mid 1980's. For those interested, we'll go through some examples of position fixing using these solution, which overlaps with some of the Yacht Master Ocean content.

Lastly, we'll look at some of the other technology that was employed until GPS firmly took over as the nautical navigators principle navigation instrument.
