Join us for a week in early summer exploring this mega sailing area in Southern Brittany
Departing from La Trinté Sur Mer (the sailing capital of France, the "Cowes" of the Atlantic) we'll sail both east into the Gulf of Morbihan and west via the Presqu' Ile de Quiberon out onto La Cote Sauvage to the Atlantic islands of Houat, Hoëdic and Belle Isle
The itinerary will be subject to the tides and the weather
At the northern end of the Bay of Biscay, and with large Atlantic tides and strong currents, this area will provide excellent navigational experience
The Gulf of Morbihan ("Little Sea" in Breton) is an inland sea boasting up to 40 islands (depending on the tide), and is a haven of beaches, oyster beds and bird life. Ancient megalithic standing stones grace the shoreline, most notably at Carnac. The 14km-long peninsula of Presqu'île de Quiberon marks the Atlantic edge of the Gulf of Morbihan and is flanked on its western side by the rocky, wave-lashed Côte Sauvage (Wild Coast). Beyond, the low-lying offshore islands have been inhabited by seafaring Bretons since Medieval times.
With the Atlantic's rugged windswept coastline, steep cliffs and stunning beaches, and the inland sea skirted with historic medieval towns, villages, beautiful chateaux and ancient standing stones, this promises to be a week of great variety. And with the Gulf of Morbihan being a national regional park, we can expect fine flora and birdlife. Our onshore time can be spent hiring bicycles, mooching round art galleries, markets or chandlery stores, and sampling the many fine restaurants, with seafood a particular local speciality of this area of French/Breton cuisine
