Offshore Skills Development weekend - August - Advanced Pilotage Cancelled
Skills Development weekend from Fri eve 20th to Sunday 22nd August, skipper by an RYA Instructor.
Advanced Pilotage Tecniques
This is a weekend focussed on honing pilotage skills. It will give attendees the chance to practice and build on the pilotage techniques that will have been learned/practiced in their RYA Day skipper theory/practical.
The course will give you confidence to navigate at close quarters in day, night or fog even if your electronics have failed.
This course is suitable for those whose skills are at RYA Day skipper level or higher. Below is an example of what will be covered though the exact make up of the weekend will be (as always in sailing) to some extent determined by conditions and strength of crew.
- Working up and following forward/back bearings
- Identifying and following transits, both charted and natural
- Using clearing bearings to avoid dangers
- Anchoring on predetermined spot
- Tacking safely between unseen shallows or dangers
- Night pilotage
- Latticing (quick position plots when tacking up wind at night)
- Following depth contours
- Blind Navigation (simulated fog navigation)
