Plenty of vistors came for this and we raised £100 for the Dinghy Fund.
Speed
Sails was represented by such worthy names as Stevie Morrison (Left, fireball
champion), James Ward (cadet trainer) as well as Richard Estaugh himself (right).
Richard explained quite a few things - even the odd sailing rule. A few tips & figures for you (do experiment, nothing is absolute!) as far as I my memory serves:
Make sure the mast is straight when rigged.
Rake: measured by taking a tape from the main halyard first to the gooseneck black band then to the the transom 21' 2" (21' 4" for older boats)
Spreaders avg 410mm long (longer for less crew weight), Spreades raked back 177 mm, possibly to 183 mm for Corinthian cnditions - Richard believes flatter sails give more acceleration in gusty conditions.
Lots of kicker upwind especially in heavy weather.
Lots of outhall, let off outhall1.5" max for reach, 0.75" for run.
In modern Enterprise sit crew 10" from Shroud upwind.
If you do raise your rudder it MUST be before and for the whole race.
Easy on the cunningham.
Ben Luddington has managed to persuade Richard Estaugh of Speed Sails & the current Enterprise National Champion, to come and talk to us about cutting and tuning Enterprise sails, on Tuesday 8th January at 8pm, right in the middle of the Boat Show. We will include a glass of mulled wine in the £5 ticket. Proceeds to the Dinghy Fund.
