It is amazing what you can do with a few metres of fabric, a bale of hay, some delicious food and a great band. These were the key ingredients to 2005's highly successful Summer Ball. While Cressida Robson tore her hair out over the seating plan - "I'm sure we had another table" - our resident set designer Liz Griffiths (fresh from working on Dr Who) got Blue Peter-like with wire, marigold-coloured fabric, a bale of hay and pots of flowers to create our Midsummer Night's Dream theme. The food, of course, was fab and the band Li'l Rock were a wow! The only thing missing was our dear Social Secretary, Karen Shefras, who had pulled it all together, but found herself languishing with her hunky exhibition-building crew in a bar in Kenya wishing she was here. Yeah, Karen we believe you.
