Prada back on top, New York Yacht Club move up.
by John Roberson
AUCKLAND, December 11 (Reuters) - A convincing win for Italy's Prada team on Saturday moved them back to the top of the scoreboard in the third round of the Louis Vuitton Cup, while the New York Yacht Club climbed back two places to seventh.
The Prada Challenge, skippered by Francesco de Angelis, gained control on the starting line in their match against previously second placed America True and maintained their advantage to take the gun by 54 seconds.
The Italian crew had monopolised the top of the scoreboard from the first round in October, until 6th November, when San Francisco's AmericaOne displaced them.
However a surprise upset defeat for Paul Cayard's AmericaOne crew, by Bertrand Pace and his Le defi Francais team, allowed Prada to reclaim the top spot.
Commenting on his defeat, Paul Cayard, skipper of AmericaOne said, "it was a tough race, we've sailed quite a few tough races with the French in the past.
"Bertand beat me in the Match Racing World Championships in La Rochelle in 1994, and he is always a tough guy to race against, we felt things were going pretty good today, we had a nice start, but it was just a tough race all the way around."
Meanwhile, the New York Yacht Club's Young America team, who on Friday dropped to ninth place, came home convincing winners against the Spanish Challenge to keep their hope of a semi-final place alive.
At the end of this round, the top six on the scoreboard progress to the semi-finals, while the rest are eliminated from the series, and with the top four boats now assured of their places, the battle is hotting up for the two remaining berths.
In other races on Saturday, Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes defeated the Aloha Challenge, and Nippon Challenge beat Young Australia.
Speculation was rife before the start, that Paul Cayard would throw this race against the French in order to shut his bitter rivals from the New York Yacht Club out of the semi-finals.
However informed scources who watched the race believe the win was genuine for the French, who have found form late in this event, moving into the top six for the first time on Friday.
Eleven challenges from seven nations started the Louis Vuitton Cup in October, and the eventual winner will face Team New Zealand in the America's Cup starting in February next year.

New York Yacht Club on the edge of the abyss.
by John Roberson
AUCKLAND, December 10 (Reuters) - The New York Yacht Club's Young America team are on the edge of the abyss in the Louis Vuitton Cup, having suffered a critical loss to their west coast rivals AmericaOne on Friday.
Paul Cayard and his AmericaOne crew from San Francisco cruised home to a comfortable 1 minute, 8 second victory over the bastion of the east coast establishment, Young America, having controlled the race from start to finish.
The plight of Young America was not helped by a victory for Le Defi Francais team over Spain's Bravo Espana, which help to sink the one time holder of the America's Cup down to ninth place on the scoreboard.
At the end of the current third round of the Louis Vuitton Cup, only the top six teams on the scoreboard will progress to the semi-finals, and the prospects for the New York Yacht Club are not good.
This club that held the world's most coveted sailing trophy, by hook or by crook, for 132 years, are in desperate straights as they try to keep their challenge alive.
Ed Baird, skipper of Young America admitted after the race, "we are struggling to get the points that we need, that is very clear, we are dissappointed that we've lost a couple of races that we hoped to have won this week, but it has been a very challenging week.
"We still have four races to go, that we can win, and we know we need to win them, so that is what we are looking forward to," he said, with desperation writen all across his face.
While America True beat Nippon Challenge, Italy's Prada beat Young Australia, and Stars & Stripes scored an easy nine points over Switzerland, who have pulled out of the series, little mattered on Friday except the AmericaOne versus Young America, and France versus Spain matches.
When Paul Cayard gained control of his match with Young America, soon after the start, Ed Baird, the New York Yacht Club's skipper must have been watching the French/Spanish match out of the corner of his eye.
A win for the Bertrand Pace and his French crew leap-frogged them from ninth place to sixth, overtaking Young America, Hawaii's Aloha Challenge and the Spanish.

France defeats Dennis Conner.
by John Roberson
AUCKLAND, December 8 (Reuters) - The French team, Le Defi Francais, skippered by Bertrand Pace, pulled off the upset of the day by defeating Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes in the Louis Vuitton Cup on Thursday.
The French, down in ninth place on the scoreboard, beat Stars & Stripes
Also putting wins on the scoreboard were America True skippered by John Cutler, Paul Cayard's AmericaOne, the Prada Challenge from Italy, and the Hawaiian based Aloha Challenge.
It was another day of stealth on the Hauraki Gulf, with very light and fickle winds making life extremely difficult for the tacticians and sail trimmers, as they tried of find patches of wind, and make the most of them.
All the boats sailed the course with a man near the top of their mast, some 100 feet above the water, where it is easier to see the wind on the water, and help to guide the boat through the minefield of calm patches.
Bertrand Pace commented after the race, "in these conditions it is not so much a case of how fast your boat is, but of staying in the pressure (wind), and we tried to do that all day today."
At the end of this third round of the Louis Vuitton Cup, only the top six boats progress to the semi-finals, to be sailing in January, next year.
Three teams are now assured of their place in the semi-finals, AmericaOne and America True, both from San Francisco, and the Prada Challenge skippered by Francesco de Angelis.
At the other end of the scoreboard, the Swiss have already withdrawn from the event, and after losing to the Aloha Challenge on Thursday, Young Australia can no longer make it into the top six.
Eleven challenges from seven nations started the Louis Vuitton Cup in October, and the eventual winner will face Team New Zealand in the America's Cup starting in February next year.

Conner beats New York Yacht Club.
by John Roberson
AUCKLAND, December 8 (Reuters) - Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes team dealt another blow to the New York Yacht Club's hopes of regaining the America's Cup, when they defeated Young America by 27 seconds on Wednesday, in the third round of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
Ken Read at the helm of Stars & Stripes, took control of the confrontation even before the start, holding Young America skipper, Ed Baird, away from the starting line until the gun had gone, to start with a 31 second advantage.
It was another nerve wracking day for the tacticians, with the start in a light, shifty northerly breeze of about 5 knots, which was replaced half way through the race by a 15 knot southerly.
At the first mark Team Dennis Conner had built a lead of over two minutes, after a difficult and frustrating opening leg, which took 43 minutes to sail.
It was on the second leg that the wind did a 180 degree turn around, allowing Young America to close the gap to just 32 seconds, and then to 9 seconds at the third mark.
However Ken Read, and tacticians Tom Whidden and Peter Holmberg, sailed a classic match race, always staying between the opposition and the next mark to take the winning gun.
This will be a particularly sweet victory for Conner, who is blamed to this day by the New York Yacht Club for the 1983 loss of the America's Cup to Australia, when he skippered their defender.
Stars and Stripes are now in fifth place on the scoreboard, as opposed to Young America's seventh, with the top six boats after this round making the cut into the semi-finals.
In the only other race of the day, America True skippered by John
Cutler had a comfortable victory over James Spithill and his Young
Australia crew

Prada toppled from the top of the scoreboard.
by John Roberson
AUCKLAND, December 7 (Reuters) - Italy's Prada Challenge have been knocked off the top of the scoreboard for the first time since the Louis Vuitton Cup started back in October, with Paul Cayard's AmericaOne taking over the top spot.
On a day of frustration and contrasts on Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, Peter Gilmour and his Nippon Challenge crew, inflicted a telling defeat on the Italians, who have now been beaten two days in a row.
The race started in 8 to 10 knots of breeze, but died out halfway through the day, before returning in force, with Nippon driven home by a wind that had built to 20 knots.
Nippon were at one stage a massive 12 minutes, 22 seconds ahead of their rivals, but the Italians closed the gap down to 3 minutes 13 seconds by the finish.
Meanwhile Paul Cayard and the AmericaOne crew, from San Francisco crossed the finishing line nearly 12 minutes clear of the Spanish Challenge skippered by Luis Doreste.
John Kolius and the Aloha Challenge chalked up nine points for sailing around the course alone in the absence of Switzerland's Fast 2000, who have pulled out of the regatta.
It was a nightmare day for the tacticians, with tension running high amongst the afterguard on each boat as they searched for fickle zephyrs of breeze in the middle of the race, while sitting for nearly an hour almost becalmed.
Two races did not get the benefit of the returning breeze before their time limit expired, Le Defi Francais versus Young America, and Young Australia against America True.
Dennis Conner has confirmed that his Stars & Stripes will be ready to sail again on Wednesday, having repaired the damage caused when a bulkhead ripped out of the boat on Sunday.

Cayard beats Prada
by John Roberson
AUCKLAND, December 6 (Reuters) - The match of the day at the Louis Vuitton Cup turned out to be a cliff-hanger, with Paul Cayard and his AmericaOne team snatching a last ditch victory from the Italian Prada crew.
Cayard and his tactician John Kostecki had lured the Italians into a close pre-start battle, which got too close when Prada's bow crashed into AmericaOne's stern, and the umpires awarded a penalty against Prada.
Although the Francesco de Angelis eventually got the better of the start, and led throughout the race, when he tried to take his penalty turn just before finishing, Cayard slipped past to take the gun by 23 seconds.
It appeared that when the Italians rounded the last mark of the race, they had a big enough margin to execute their penalty and still win, but chose to delay the turn until close to the finishing line, by which time the America's had narrowed the gap.
"We were never sure of the outcome of that race," commented Cayard later, "it was a good race, regardless of the final result, it's just good to be in a tough race like that and hang close, it was good even before we crossed the finish line."
This puts Paul Cayard's AmericaOne challenge just one point behind Prada at the top of the scoreboard, and both teams virtually assured of their semi-finals places.
In other matches on Monday, Nippon Challenge defeated the Spanish Challenge, America True chalked up a comfortable win over the Aloha Challenge, and Young Australia sailed alone around the course to record a win over the absent Swiss.
Nippon Challenge, skippered by by Peter Gilmour, are now the only undefeated team since the third round started on Thursday (2nd December), and they have moved up to third place on the scoreboard.
Conditions on the Hauraki Gulf today were light and shifty, with the wind rarely reaching 10 knots, and flicking between south westerly and south easterly, making life difficult not only for the tacticians, but for the race director as well.
Eleven challenges from seven nations started the Louis Vuitton Cup in October, and the eventual winner will face Team New Zealand in the America's Cup starting in February next year.
