Aeolian Islands. Sicily. Italy

Dates: 24th June 2017 – 1st July 2017

The Aeolian Islands are located off the northern coast of Sicily. This volcanic chain of seven islands is named after the wind god Aeolus. They are a UNESCO World Heritage site and they provide a rich field for volcanological studies of on-going geological processes in the development of landforms.

The Aeolian Islands are described as a little piece of paradise, a magical playground offering beauty and excitement. Stunning blue waters provide fun for swimmers sailors and divers while walkers can climb hissing volcanoes.

This is a popular sailing holiday with harbours and anchorages sheltered from the prevailing summer winds. The food is excellent and the local people are very hospitable. There are marinas on Lipari and Salina.

Draft Itinerary subject to change

Portorosa marina -

We start journey through the Aeolian islands from Marina di Portorosa in the town of Tonnarella.

Day 1 – Lipari

The main and most populated island with a busy harbour. There is an excellent Aeolean museum on the island.

Day 2 – Salina

Salina is the second largest island in the Aeolian group. Its twin craters of Monte dei Porri and Monte Fossa delle Felci boast lush, verdant landscape. Its hillsides are vibrant colours and cool greens and costal cliffs plunge towards dramatic beaches

Day 3 – Stromboli

With its smoking silhouette, the island of Stromboli is just the tip of a vast underwater volcano that rises from the seabed 1476m below. Stromboli is the only island in the archipelago that has permanent volcanic activity. It is the most captivating of the islands. Volcanic activity has scarred and blacked one side of the island, while the eastern side is untamed, ruggedly green and dotted with white washed houses. It is possible to climb to the crater and possibly do an evening sail to watch the natural fireworks at sea.

Day 4 – Panarea

Exclusive and expensive, Panera is the smallest and most fashionable of the islands. The main village, Contra San Pietro, consists of a picturesque group of white houses clustered along the eastern side of the island. The built-up area is crowned with olive trees and protected by huge walls

Day 5 – Filicudi

Filicudi measures less than 10 square kilometres and is the most ragged of the islands. It is a quiet holiday island and remains of prehistoric settlements from Bronze Age have also been found here

Day 6 – Vulcano

Vulcano's volcanic nature has long been impressing visitors. The ancient romans believed it to be the chimney of the fire god Vulcan's workshop and the island is today celebrated for its therapeutic mud baths and hot springs. The main attraction is the Fossa di Vulcao, the steaming volcano that towers over the island's north eastern shores
